EDITING NEEEEEEWS!

HELLO.

It recently occurred to me that I haven't mentioned my latest editing work. Or at least, not for a while. So here it is!

A short while ago I finished editing THE END AND THE BEGINNING, a YA novel about a teenager who discovers he can talk to birds. It's written by G.G. Neilson and is a really nice, easy read with colourful characters and a strong sense of place. I also found out a lot more about different birds after working on this, which was fun. 

Right now, I'm finishing up NUADA, a more adult novel written by Gillian Bridé Madell concerning the ancient Irish tribes of the Firbolg and Tuatha. There's a lot of low fantasy (ie. magic, rather than monsters) and expansive, pivotal battles in the story and this has given me an insight into a part of folklore I never knew much about.

I've enjoyed working on both these books (obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be doing this, duuuhhh), and they'll be released via BELFIRE PRESS. I'm not sure when, but if these sound like stories you'd like to read, keep an eye out on their site, here and/or the respective authors' sites!

And finally, in personal writing news, I've submitted my latest novel, A WRETCHED PLACE, to a publisher so I've got my fingers crossed this leads to something. In a world gripped by monstrous gods, a woman searches for the creature that exploded from her father's corpse, whilst her estranged husband tries to find her and save her life. There's a strong undercurrent of insidious menace, weird cults and quantum mechanics, and I'm really pleased with how it's turned out. It is a little unconventional in it's structure, too, as it alternates between the woman and the man as their paths slowly converge. It's influenced by Sophocles' Theban plays, Jeff Vandermeer and, of course, Lovecraft (but without being explicit, or even directly tied into his mythos - I've gone for a feeling rather than homage, if you like).

I AM ALL ENDEAVOURED UP

Ahoy-hoy! I'm positively bursting with creative endeavours at the moment, so let me talk about them before I explode. UUNNGGHHH.

1. SPACE REX 2

RAWR!

When Clive the T-Rex witnessed his beloved wife Brenda and all his friends get wiped out by a gigantic asteroid, he developed an instant and severe hatred of all space rocks. As he then perished in screaming rage, he swore his spirit would never rest until all space rocks were wiped out of existence. At that moment, he was Clive no more, but SPACE REX!

Now you can take control of his disembodied head and vomit cosmic energy laser breath across the final sector of space to still have space rocks in it. But beware - it turns out asteroids are being controlled by cosmic horrors, so you'll have to laser them to death too.

SPACE REX 2 will be my second computer game. It's about 50% complete and will be FREEEEEE to play once it is finished. For deets, eyeball THIS LINK.

2. THE END AND THE BEGINNING

Is it normal size and on a tree, or gigantic and on a cliff?

This is a YA novel by G. G. Neilson I'm currently editing. It's about a teenage boy who discovers he can communicate with birds. I know I'm biased, but it's really enjoyable. I think it'll be out in a month or two. More deets via Belfire Press HERE.

3. A WRETCHED PLACE

This is the actual book I have, ooo fancy.

And THIS is my latest novel. It's influenced by the Theban plays, quantum mechanics, Jeff Vandermeer and Lovecraft (with a sprinkling of Raymond Chandler). It's now complete, after been critiqued by beta readers, and I'm going to fire it off to a publisher this weekend. Fingers crossed for THAT. It's about a husband trying to save his estranged wife, against the backdrop of a world in the grip of monstrous gods. There's time/reality travel, giant monsters, weird cults and themes of buried truth, repetition and unavoidable fate. I'm really, really pleased with it and seriously hope it finds a home somewhere because it's the fucking business.

And the last thing I'm endeavouring about, is music for SPACE REX 2. I've had some feedback from CHARRED CORPSE GUNFIGHT that the soundtrack is "epic", which is really nice to hear. You can hear that music, and something from SR2, HERE. They're only short tracks and are minimalist electronica.

WHERE'S WALLY?

So where is he?

"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, WAYNE?" is possibly the question on someone's lips right now. I've been offline, that's where, person-who-I-may-or-may-not-know! But now I'm back. Online, that is!

So what's the crack, Jack? Well, I'm knee-deep in a funding bid for an arts festival (some of which you can find out about HERE) and editing (someone else's) novel! (Also more about this in the not-too-distant future). I'm also tweaking some music I wrote as part of February Album Writing Month (which you can hear HERE if you're intrigued in dirty beats mixed with vintage PSA samples) and settling into a new house.

A little while before I went offline, I decided that it'd be nuts if I didn't try to get back into editing stories, but on a more professional (freelance) level. Therefore, I'm now offering said services  I'll have full details via my website/here soon, but for now if you're interested, then by all means get in touch. I'm also trying to put together a proper 'resume' regarding this, but I'm not entirely sure how such things should be laid out, especially since three books I edited never saw print (due to financial reasons with the publisher, not cos I did a shoddy job).

In any case, I have a decent amount of experience in not just general proofreading but interior formatting (although I am more than aware that this latter point can vary wildly from publisher to publisher) and believe I can offer competitive rates. I think that'll do for now as a 'teaser' until I get something a little more solid spelled out.
